performance review [Feb. 14th, 2008|10:54 am]
I like how on my performance review website for work it lists unfinished reviews under the heading of "Outstanding Reviews."  If only, onCore web application, if only....

things not to do on an airplane [Jan. 29th, 2008|09:49 am]
i had 5 flights this weekend.  so i experimented with things to do during take off.

Recommended:
-reading SkyMall - everyone needs one of those giant wall-sized crossword puzzles.  or the world thinnest watch.
-a good book - mine was Jonathan Lethem's Amnesia Moon; he writes genre fiction for grownups or the NY Times Book Review crowd.

Not Recommended:
-dreaming - its fun to fall asleep during take off.  it is not fun to have a dream about a car wreck during take off.
-Untrue, by Burial + sleep - i picked up pitchfork's number 10 album of the year.  its beautiful and dark and terrifying.  which is awesome, except as you are being lifted off the ground and drifting off.

because i hate my job... [Jan. 23rd, 2008|10:17 am]
if i ruled the oscars...
my choice in bold, * denotes a film i havent seen

Performance by an actor in a leading role

*George Clooney in “Michael Clayton” (Warner Bros.)
Daniel Day-Lewis in “There Will Be Blood” (Paramount Vantage and Miramax)
Johnny Depp in “Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”
*Tommy Lee Jones in “In the Valley of Elah” (Warner Independent)
*Viggo Mortensen in “Eastern Promises” (Focus Features)

Performance by an actor in a supporting role
*Casey Affleck in “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” (Warner Bros.)
Javier Bardem in “No Country for Old Men” (Miramax and Paramount Vantage)
*Philip Seymour Hoffman in “Charlie Wilson’s War” (Universal)
*Hal Holbrook in “Into the Wild” (Paramount Vantage and River Road Entertainment)
*Tom Wilkinson in “Michael Clayton” (Warner Bros.)
I can't imagine a better character performance; I really felt like this guy was evil itself, more of a force than a person.

Performance by an actress in a leading role
*Cate Blanchett in “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (Universal)
Julie Christie in “Away from Her” (Lionsgate)
Marion Cotillard in “La Vie en Rose” (Picturehouse)
*Laura Linney in “The Savages” (Fox Searchlight)
Ellen Page in “Juno” (Fox Searchlight)
That's a vote for the movie, if nothing else.

Performance by an actress in a supporting role
Cate Blanchett in “I’m Not There” (The Weinstein Company)
Ruby Dee in “American Gangster” (Universal)
*Saoirse Ronan in “Atonement” (Focus Features)
*Amy Ryan in “Gone Baby Gone” (Miramax)
*Tilda Swinton in “Michael Clayton” (Warner Bros.)
I think Cate Blanchett played Dylan in the actual 60's.

Best animated feature film of the year
“Persepolis” (Sony Pictures Classics) Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud
      “Ratatouille” (Walt Disney) Brad Bird
*“Surf's Up” (Sony Pictures Releasing) Ash Brannon and Chris Buck
Surf's Up looked terrible.  Edit: I saw this today.  It should win.

Achievement in art direction
      “American Gangster” (Universal)
      *“Atonement” (Focus Features)
*“The Golden Compass” (New Line in association with Ingenious Film Partners)
“Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (DreamWorks and Warner Bros., Distributed by DreamWorks/Paramount)
“There Will Be Blood” (Paramount Vantage and Miramax)
If I could remember any of the lyrics, I'd reproduce the "London" song.

Achievement in cinematography
*“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” (Warner Bros.) Roger Deakins
      *“Atonement” (Focus Features) Seamus McGarvey
“The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” (Miramax/Pathé Renn) Janusz Kaminski
“No Country for Old Men” (Miramax and Paramount Vantage) Roger Deakins
“There Will Be Blood” (Paramount Vantage and Miramax) Robert Elswit
The last three should all win.

Achievement in costume design
*“Across the Universe” (Sony Pictures Releasing) Albert Wolsky
      *“Atonement” (Focus Features) Jacqueline Durran
*“Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (Universal) Alexandra Byrne
“La Vie en Rose” (Picturehouse) Marit Allen
“Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (DreamWorks and Warner Bros., Distributed by DreamWorks/Paramount)
Honesty, I would vote for the vests in "Blood," but short of that, I like the gothic victoriana of Sweeney Todd.  Also, way to go Marit Allen for making an old lady look frumpy?

Achievement in directing
“The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” (Miramax/Pathé Renn) Julian Schnabel
      “Juno” (Fox Searchlight) Jason Reitman
“Michael Clayton” (Warner Bros.) Tony Gilroy
“No Country for Old Men” (Miramax and Paramount Vantage) Joel Coen and Ethan Coen
“There Will Be Blood” (Paramount Vantage and Miramax) Paul Thomas Anderson
Such a complete film.  The Coens should win for keeping it all together.

Best documentary feature
*“No End in Sight” (Magnolia Pictures)
*“Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience” (The Documentary Group)
*“Sicko” (Lionsgate and The Weinstein Company)
*“Taxi to the Dark Side” (THINKFilm)
      *“War/Dance” (THINKFilm)
Well, didn't see any of those.  I would have picked King of Kong anyway.

Best foreign language film of the year
     * “Beaufort” A Metro Communications, Movie Plus Production
     * “The Counterfeiters” An Aichholzer Filmproduktion, Magnolia Filmproduktion Production
     * “Katyń” An Akson Studio Production
     * “Mongol” A Eurasia Film Production
     * “12” A Three T Production
I think the nominaters draw the names out of a hat, because they "don't like subtitles."

Achievement in makeup
“La Vie en Rose” (Picturehouse) Didier Lavergne and Jan Archibald
*“Norbit” (DreamWorks, Distributed by Paramount) Rick Baker and Kazuhiro Tsuji
“Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” (Walt Disney) Ve Neill and Martin Samuel
I hope Norbit wins, so they can be like Oscar Award-Winning Film, Norbit.

Best motion picture of the year
      *“Atonement” (Focus Features)
      “Juno” (Fox Searchlight)
      *“Michael Clayton” (Warner Bros.)
“No Country for Old Men” (Miramax and Paramount Vantage)
“There Will Be Blood” (Paramount Vantage and Miramax)

Achievement in sound mixing
      “The Bourne Ultimatum” (Universal)
“No Country for Old Men” (Miramax and Paramount Vantage)
      “Ratatouille” (Walt Disney)
      “3:10 to Yuma” (Lionsgate)
*“Transformers” (DreamWorks and Paramount in association with Hasbro)
I don't usually notice sound while I'm watching a film, but I did in this case.

Adapted screenplay
      *“Atonement” (Focus Features)
      “Away from Her” (Lionsgate)
“The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” (Miramax/Pathé Renn)
“No Country for Old Men” (Miramax and Paramount Vantage)
“There Will Be Blood” (Paramount Vantage and Miramax)
I felt like I was in a McCarthy novel, but Diving Bell is a super close second.

Original screenplay
      “Juno” (Fox Searchlight)
“Lars and the Real Girl” (MGM)
      *“Michael Clayton” (Warner Bros.)
      “Ratatouille” (Walt Disney)
      *“The Savages” (Fox Searchlight)
I like underdogs, and Lars didn't start with 15 minutes of unbearably tone-deaf dialogue.

cool hold steady lyric for your friday [Nov. 30th, 2007|08:17 am]
I love this telling of the Fall of Man, from Hold Steady's "Cattle and the Creeping Things" from their Separation Sunday album.  Especially the way it makes it sound like something that went down at a bar somewhere.

i guess i heard about original sin.
i heard the dude blamed the chick.
i heard the chick blamed the snake.

i heard they were naked when they got busted.
i heard things ain't been the same since

in praise of stamps [Nov. 9th, 2007|08:15 am]
I was just thinking about how i like them.  stamps are like some weird surrogate currency that only works for one things.  also, i enjoy the way they are one of the few remaining vestiges of the 18th and 19th century-style bureaucracy:  "Do you have permission to post that parcel, sir?"  "Why yes I do, here are my STAMPS!"
